Best way to color hair?

I've never colored my hair before and I was looking to lightening it a bit.

I have medium brown hair and would like it LIGHTER, LOL!!!

Do any of you know a good way to do this so I don't end up with it looking bad?

Or maybe anyone can suggest colors to stay away from.

Thanks :).

Here's the deal. Medium brown hair will always pull warmth when you lighten it. Especially if you are one of the lucky people to have a particular type of melanin in your hair which makes your hair pull A LOT of warmth(read: ugly orange). My suggestion would be to start out trying highlights at your salon. If it is done properly, highlights can give your hair a lighter, dimensional appearance with less upkeep than all over color. The tone of the highlights can be controlled easier than all over color as well. If you must do an all over lightening, by all means, do it in a salon. I have been a stylist for 15 years and have corrected many home hair jobs. Take it from me, unless you are ready to be a redhead, don't attempt that one at home. The money you save at first you will spend ten fold trying to get your color fixed.
