I also have thick medium long hair and be careful about what you choose. With thick hair the result will always have more volume and/or frizz than you expect unless you weigh it down with lots of product. The curls/waves just lay on top of each other and voila, you are all hair and not looking like the picture in the magazine. Good luck

You should definitely NOT do it yourself, go to a salon and tell the hairstylist EXACTLY what you want. The larger the rollers, the looser the curl. You also need to do the float test to make sure that your hair can handle a perm. If your hair floats it's good! If your hair sinks, you need to use some good conditioners until your hair is healthy again.
